Abundant Housing LA is excited to endorse Juan Carrillo for State Assembly District 39. Juan is a trained urban planner who understands the importance of housing abundance. He currently serves as a member of the Palmdale City Council where he has fought to expand affordable housing, address the homelessness crisis, increase green space, and support local small businesses as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Juan was born and raised in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, and immigrated to Los Angeles when he was 15. He earned his Associate’s Degree in Architecture from College of the Desert, Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from California State Polytechnic University Pomona, and Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California State University Northridge. Before entering public office, Carrillo served as a city planner for 15 years — 10 of which were with the City of Palmdale.
Juan’s training in urban planning and experience working as a city planner ultimately led him to run for public office. Immediately after being elected to the Palmdale City Council in 2016, Juan led the council’s update to its General Plan — its major blueprint for future growth — for the first time in two decades. Juan fought so all neighborhoods of the city would have the same opportunities for parks, open space, police and fire facilities, job centers, and affordable housing. Additionally, Juan put his professional experience as a city planner to work by streamlining the permitting of badly needed new homes that working families can afford in every neighborhood.
Juan is widely endorsed by leaders across California, including Senator María Elena Durazo, Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, housing champion Senator Scott Wiener, as well as legendary civil rights leader Dolores Huerta. Unions representing teachers and carpenters are also united behind Juan.
