Take action: speak up against the SB 9 lawsuit
- The cities of Redondo Beach, Torrance, Carson, and Whittier have filed a lawsuit against Senate Bill 9 (2021), which legalizes duplexes and lot splits for areas zoned for single-family detached houses only.
SB 9 was a key legislative achievement from last year. It is a sensible policy that helps to relieve housing scarcity AND advance fair housing. SB 9 overrides single-family zoning, which mandates expensive detached houses in the vast majority (78%) of LA County, blocking lower-income families from moving into neighborhoods with good jobs, schools, and plentiful amenities.
Attorney General Rob Bonta is responsible for defending SB 9 in court. His office had been steadfastly holding cities accountable for accomodating housing, issuing warnings to cities against unlawful efforts to block new housing. Please join AHLA in thanking him for his pro-housing efforts, and urge him to vigorously defend SB 9 in the court!

- Elena Christopoulos. Elena is a climate scientist, Certified Sustainability Practitioner (CSP-R) and political consultant at the top of her game. She has managed over 40 political and environmental campaigns worldwide and is currently a Commissioner for the City of Santa Monica.
- Jose Trinidad Castaneda. Jose Trinidad Castaneda (he/they) is a Municipal Policy Advisor and Pro-Housing advocate. He serves as Chair of the Orange County Power Authority Community Advisory Committee for the cities of Irvine, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, and Buena Park.
- Kathrina Abrot. Kathrina Abrot provides fundraising and strategic campaign services to political candidates, PAC’s, and nonprofits. She has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and run successful, winning political campaigns. Key efforts under her belt include Flip The West and mobilizing marginalized voters in the AAPI community.
