Take action: help formerly incarcerated people secure housing, support AB 2383!

People exiting incarceration face many discrimination, including housing discrimination, that makes reintegration into society much more difficult. At the same time, systemic racism in our criminal legal system means incarceration disproportionately impacts Black, Latino, Indigenous, and other communities of color.

AB 2383 helps formerly incarcerated people secure housing by preventing landlords from asking their criminal history in the initial screening of tenants. If a landlord considers criminal history after the initial screening, AB 2383 will also provide important protection against unreasonable denials of application based on criminal history.

AB 2383 is in the suspense file in the Senate Appropriations Committee and will fail if it doesn’t advance in time. Formerly incarcerated people deserve a chance at stable housing. Join AHLA in urging your state legislators to support this impactful bill today!
